Why Java is not cheap hosting
A PHP site starts a process per request and gives the memory back. A Java application starts once and keeps its heap, caches and thread stacks in RAM all the time. A small application needs about 1 GB of server RAM. A normal business application with a database needs 2 to 4 GB. Providers that sell Java hosting on shared plans mostly limit memory and restrict what you can run, which is why a plain VPS often costs the same and gives more control (shared hosting vs a Java VPS).
What you are really paying for
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| RAM | Sets what the JVM can do. Too little means crashes or heavy swapping |
| CPU cores | One core is enough for a small site, but startup and garbage collection are slower |
| Dedicated or burstable | Dedicated resources give steady performance. Oversold hosts show up as CPU steal |
| Disk | SSD or NVMe for logs, database and fast startup |
| Root access | Needed to choose Java and Tomcat versions and install a database |
| Backups | Off-server copies you can restore. Count them as part of the price |
| Support | Who fixes a Java problem at night, you or the provider |
Size before you shop
- Pick the heap your application needs (ask the developer or measure on a test machine).
- Add 300 to 600 MB for metaspace, threads and JVM overhead.
- Add the database and Nginx if they run on the same server, and about 300 MB for the OS.
The JVM heap calculator does this for you and names a plan. See also how much RAM a Java app needs.
Compare offers the fair way
- Compare guaranteed RAM, not the headline price. A cheap plan with half the memory is not cheaper.
- Look at the renewal price, not only the first month.
- Check whether Java is allowed and supported (a few providers only offer PHP and Node).
- Ask how backups work and how long a restore takes.
- Add up extras: a managed service, a control panel licence, a database add-on.
Your time is a cost too
An unmanaged VPS is cheaper per month, but updates, backups and a night-time outage are your work. A managed plan includes that work. Decide how much your hours are worth. Our plans are listed on the prices page with what each includes. The Java VPS plans are unmanaged with ready scripts. The managed plans include setup, updates, monitoring and backups.
Questions about how much does java hosting cost
What is the cheapest way to host a Java application?
A small unmanaged VPS with enough RAM for your heap plus overhead. Do not go below that: a cheaper server that crashes costs more than it saves.
Is free Java hosting realistic?
Free tiers usually have too little memory and sleep when idle. They suit tests and demos, not production.
